Serious question-particularly to do with comedy-why can't American Audiences understand the concept of irony?

This is not a Brit slagging of our American cousins-I am trying to get my head around why ironic jokes or statements are not understood by even intelligent Americans.Is it a cultural phenomenon more than anything else?
