Metal watch strap too tight or loose?

I have a Nixon 51-30 watch with a metal link strap. When I take a link out it's either too tight or too loose. Does anyone have a solution I haven't thought about? I dont want to buy another strap such as a plastic one. Just wonder if anyone's got any obvious tricks to make it fit I've not thought of?
